„‚Insane‘ ETH fees postpone launch of NFT game Aavegotchi
„Aavegotchi on L2 means no gas fees, faster transaction confirmations and a great gaming experience,“ the project said.
DeFi project Aavegotchi is postponing the mainnet launch of its digital collection game using non-fungible tokens due to high activity on the Ethereum blockchain.
According to a tweet from the team today, Aavegotchi plans to postpone the launch of its game on 4 January in response to the „insanely high cost of gas“ and „extreme volatility“ on Ethereum. The project also said it would „most likely“ migrate to Matic Network, a smart-contract platform and second-tier scaling solution Bitcoin Storm for Ethereum.
„Aavegotchi on L2 means no gas fees, faster transaction confirmations and a great gaming experience,“ the project shared, adding that the launch is still scheduled for January.
According to the Aavegotchi whitepaper, the game involves digital collectible ghost avatars linked to interest-bearing Aave (AAVE) aTokens. A combination of attributes determine the value of the ghost avatars. These include random attributes when the tokens are minted and the value of the aTokens and „wearables“ used by the user. These are NFTs that can be programmatically bound to any Aavegotchi.
Many users reacted positively to the news, given the recent rise in Ethereum fees. Gas prices averaged US$10.20 per transaction on Sunday. Meanwhile, the price rose to over 1,000 US dollars and reached new highs for the year.
This was the right move. Thank you for listening to the community
I’m even more excited now to oce we launch on L2!

The project is also one of several Ethereum games favouring Matic as a scaling solution ahead of the Eth2 launch. SkyWeaver, a collectible card game with Ethereum-based in-game items, announced on Sunday it would launch its open beta on the network.
